This is the transcript for the testimony that I gave during my church service on 080804
Good morning/ afternoon everyone. My name is Edmund , and I am currently studying in NIE 2nd year. Today, I would like to share about how I came to know God.
When I was young boy , my main aim was just to please my parents and myself by getting good grades in every subjects in school. . But when I was in Secondary 3, my teacher ask us a simple question : What are you going to do after you graduate? I suddenly realized that I had no clear personal aims in life. I felt very lost. I needed a sense of direction. I wanted to know what is my TRUE purpose and fulfillment in life.
I tried many means. I thought that by setting and achieving goals, I would be purposeful and satisfied. I tried to do community service and even went mountain trekking in the Himalayas. But after each event or expedition trip, there is always the question of what’s next?. I would return to the state that I was before; unsatisfied and craving for more. I was never truly happy.
At the same time, I started reading books about philosophy and religion, as I wanted a set of answers to live out my life meaningfully. I even spent my free time in National Service to define my own philosophy of life. But despite all my efforts, I still felt that something was lacking.
When I enter NIE in July last year, I met a group of trainee teachers from this church who shared Jesus to me. However, I wasn’t convinced then because I wanted to know everything about Jesus first before accepting Him.But though much sharing with them, I came to realize that there is a limit to the knowledge and my understanding about the world. I simply cannot wait and see, and find out everything about Jesus in order to accept him as my personal Lord and Savior. This would require a step of faith.
Moreover, this group of trainee teacher don’t just see share about Jesus as a concept, but through their lives. I can feel the love that they have for others. Last October, during the exam period , they delivered tonic soup to my hall room at around midnight because they know that I would be hungry while I was revising my work. I could see that they were already feeling very tired but they still went all the way to send me the soup. I can see that God’s love really touched them to go beyond their comfort zone to meet the needs of others
Through this period, I became more and more convinced and assured that Jesus is the answer to the questions that I have been searching! He is the one who provides the why and the how, to live my life. That is when I decided to take that step of faith to accept Jesus into my life and start a personal relationship with him.
After knowing God and experiencing him more in my life, I gradually grown to live for other people around me. In the past, I would always think of myself first and how I can benefit from any situation. For example, I would refuse to share notes with others for fear that they might get better grades than me. Now, not only do I share my notes with my friends but I also post my resources and even some important exam tips online in my forum as well. Now, I experience much joy in my heart when I serve others , and that’s because I no longer expect anything in return. I came to realize that true happiness is real when shared.
I am so glad to be able to know God. I am also thankful to God for this church where I can grow and mature. Now, I look forward to living out God’s plan for me because I am excited to see where God will lead me. I believe that as I continue to grow in God, my life will indeed be LIFE, life to the fullest. Thank You!
